It was the winter of 2001, and the popular novelist Barbara Kingsolver was facing a deluge of hate mail. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks she had written a series of opinion pieces for US newspapers, urging contemplation and debate, and her ideas (the suggestion, for instance, that "in critical times, our leaders need most to be influenced by the moderating force of dissent") were proving seriously unpopular.
Professor Brian Cox, as he is known today, was "surprised and chuffed" to get an OBE for services to science, though the one-time musician is now probably Britain's most recognisable TV boffin. Actor and charity worker Vicky Michelle, most famous for her role in the TV wartime comedy 'Allo 'Allo, receives an MBE, as do three Corrie veterans: Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop), Barbara Knox (Rita Sullivan) and Anne Reid (Valerie Barlow). An OBE goes to Tamara Mellon, founder and chief creative officer of Jimmy Choo, the "to die for" shoe firm.
Barbara Harris thinks they should. She's already started a campaign in America, now she's coming to the UK
It's overcast in Possilpark, one of the most deprived areas of Glasgow. Outside the pound shops and bookmakers on the high street, Barbara Harris, founder of US charity Project Prevention, is giving out flyers. She hands one to James, a wiry man in his 20s. "I'm from a nonprofit organisation," she tells him. "If you know any drug addicts or alcoholics who could get pregnant, we will pay them Â?200 to be on long-term birth control."
Although she had five half-brothers and sisters, her childhood was lonely at times, just her and her mother in the Sussex countryside, when they were not away touring. Her parents were "incredibly confident", she says; she wasn't. Yet at the same time there was a belief. At nine, she was acting in her father's TV adaptation of The Camomile Lawn, and realised immediately that this was what she wanted to do with her life. Yet she gave up acting the second the cameras stopped rolling â?? she had no interest in being a child actor. "My mother exposed me to a lot of powerful women in old Hollywood films like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck. And I wanted to be Davis in All About Eve, no question. I just wanted to grow up and get on with it."
Ronay died yesterday morning at his home near Yattendon, Berkshire, with his wife Barbara and two daughters by his side, having been ill for a number of weeks, according to his friend Nick Ross, the broadcaster. He had never retired and just a few weeks ago was telling friends about new projects he had in the pipeline with the BBC.
Dutch tourist Barbara Kastein was a part of a large group who wore the dress, but many women at the stadium wore the outfit. "We were sitting near the front, making a lot of noise, and the cameras kept focusing on us," Kastein said. "We were singing songs and having a good time."
"John's young face is familiar, but this is the most youthful portrayal of Andrew ever seen, very different from the old man with grey hair and wrinkles we know from medieval painting," said project leader Barbara Mazzei.
The resident of 550 Huaihai Road in Shanghai is a rather unusual migrant. Born in Wisconsin on 9 March 1959, Barbara Millicent Roberts is the world's most famous supermodel. She drives a Corvette convertible, owns a dream home with a pool, parties with jocks and adores shopping. In the US, she was a prom queen and a role model. In China, she is emerging as an ambassador for consumer culture.
My own pilgrimage to Hull begins at the new Hull History Centre, which houses many of his papers. Here you can see Larkin's notebooks â?? his entire poetic output, complete with pencil workings, fills just eight slim volumes â?? and the thousands of letters he wrote to his mother over the course of her lifetime. But you can also look at his books, and the first thing you notice is how many of them are by women. Barbara Pym is present, of course (Larkin championed her work even after her publisher abandoned her), and his beloved Gladys Mitchell, author of Laurels are Poison and other detective novels. But so, too, are Mary McCarthy and Rosamond Lehmann, Ivy Compton-Burnett and Alison Lurie. He admired McCarthy very much. And when you flip through the hundreds of photographs Larkin left, you see that the huge majority are of this cockatoo of a woman called Monica, and in a single glance you realise what an extraordinary couple they must have made: he so soberly dressed in mackintosh and bicycle clips, and her so exquisitely and loudly turned out: extraordinary hats and wacky stockings, mannish pinstripe trousers and daringly (for the time) short skirts. Monica did not wear clothes, she wore outfits. People must have stared. No wonder Kingsley Amis loathed her, and used her as a model for the neurotic, manipulative Margaret Peel in Lucky Jim. Larkin, on the other hand, dedicated his (1955) collection, The Less Deceived, to her.
