Hackney Empire, London
In a first floor classroom in the Hackney campus of the London School of Fashion a small group of young schoolgirls are wrapping clothes on to tailor's dummies.
Geography and lifestyle also increasingly divide the modern British middle class. "There are different middle classes in different places," Pahl says. Since the early 60s, middle-class families in London have been moving into the inner city, while in most other British conurbations they have been moving out. As a consequence, the kind of homes and neighbourhoods and schools middle-class Britons use have diverged. The neat, middle-class enclaves of Edinburgh or Leeds, with their almost wholly middle-class streets and playgrounds, offer a different life from scruffier, more socially mixed but increasingly gentrified Hackney or Lambeth.
If you were to stumble on Brainboxes and Boundless Books at Hackney Museum in east London, the first thing that would strike you is the affinity between the artworks on display. For this dazzling, small-scale exhibition is the visual equivalent of a conversation. It has been curated by artist Shaun Caton, who runs art workshops for long-stay patients at Homerton hospital's neurological rehabilitation unit. It at one and the same time explores brain damage and seeks to transcend it. You will find almost no information about the artists themselves (patient confidentiality) â?? and the sense is that the art has come out of nowhere. In describing the challenges his artists were battling against, Caton lists a range of neurological conditions: Guillain-Barr?© syndrome, Parkinson's, strokes, brain trauma suffered in road accidents.
We talk also about one of the most elegant and lucid pieces on display, The Road to Recovery. The drawing of Homerton hospital looks like something out of Laurent de Brunhoff's Babar books. "It describes a maze with many ways in â?? but only one way out," Caton observes. But the exhibition gently disagrees. Its uplifting suggestion is that there are many ways out and through. Until 18 September, Hackney Museum, London E8

21st over: Pakistan 67-7 (Wahab Riaz 1, Umar Akmal 5) Actually that was a genuinely lovely, ball-of-the-century-esque style off-break from Swann to the left-hander. What a way to get your man, pitching on middle and leg, opening the batsman up, and then turning sharply to clip the off stump. That was good enough to get even a batsman (and a proper one) who was - what shall we say - supremely motivated. Jordan Hackney says it all: "The involvement of Amir in this is obviously the saddest part of the whole affair. I remember in the days after the olympics worrying that there would be news of Usain Bolt failing a drugs test, and how disappointing that would be in light of his achievements and the subsequent affection from the public. Had it been Saeed Ajmal for example, it would have still been massively damaging but you could almost have tolerated it, Amir had been the real success for Pakistan in this series and it was exciting to think how good he might be and what records he might break."
If so, she was in for a disappointment, as her husband's early promise soon began to unravel into bit parts, punch-ups, too much resting and raucous partying. Born in Hackney in 1957, the son of a fruit-and-veg market stall trader, Winstone had been a schoolboy boxing champion but got just a single CSE in drama, and was expelled from drama school for vandalising the head's car. His performance in Scum began to look like one of those rare, mercurial moments of unrepeatable inspiration â?? and he admits that, in truth, "technically and all that, I wasn't good enough".
The unbalanced structure of economic growth over the past decade has fed straight through to a disastrous social geography, bypassing the least advantaged and rewarding the wealthy. Throughout the country the poor and disadvantaged live in ever more concentrated wards that are blighted by run-down social housing and over-stretched schools. Within a single regional health authority, those in the most well-off ward can typically expect to live for 14 years longer than those in the most deprived ward. The roll-call of the deprived is bitterly familiar: east London's Hackney and Tower Hamlets, Liverpool's Knowsley, parts of Manchester, Middlesbrough and Rochdale continue to reel from deprivation, while local authorities like Richmond upon Thames, Kensington and Chelsea and Forest Heath in east Suffolk power on. The New Labour government attempted to alleviate this polarisation through interventions such as Sure Start â?? a national network of children's centres to support young families â?? investing in social housing, incentivising work, developing apprenticeship and trying to improve failing schools. At best, it achieved small gains and held the line; at worst, its initiatives were overwhelmed by the way in which the economy has developed.
8.45am: Oh, that's an awesome shot from Stricker â?? almost as good as one I saw the guardian's Tom Lutz play down at the Hackney links a few weeks ago â?? chipping in from an unfavourable lie for a birdie on the par-four 12th. It kicked on before rattling the flag pole on its way down. Fisher has a 30-foot putt to save the hole but he's nowhere near, to be honest, and Europe are now down in three.
