Arbitrary Word LimitsAs a writer, word limits are both a blessing and a curse. Many bloggers would have their writing immeasurably improved if they stuck to a word limit â?? doing that forces you to plan, to organise your thoughts, and to avoid redundancy and repetition. On the other hand, some stories need more time to tell, and sticking dogmatically to an arbitrary 800-word limit for stuff that's published on the internet doesn't make a lot of sense. The internet is not running out of space.
Heavy or not, Britain's share of Europe's eel catch can hardly be endangering the species. Immeasurably more damage, say the fishermen, is done by the commercial trawlers in the Bay of Biscay, and the villages in Spain and France whose economies depend almost entirely on elver fishing. France especially, it is rumoured, is flouting its restocking obligations and flogging as much as 15 tonnes â?? each tonne representing 3-4m baby eels â?? to China.
Are you trying to transform local politics? It would be lovely if measurably more people in the future felt they could realistically be part of the solution if there was some problem in their community, that it's not just something unimaginably over their heads that's dealt with by another class of people that they never meet. I am out to give as many people as I can a better experience of dealing with the democracy they live in and the government that rules over them.
